Utilization of Waste Glycerol for Eco-friendly Biopolymer
Authors: Dr. Anand Kulkarni, Dr. Sagar Kanekar, Vaishnavi Harkare, Durva Kore, Sakshi Desai, Atharva Aher, Anuja Abhyankar
Biodiesel production generates large amounts of waste glycerol, often discarded and harmful to the environment. This study explores using Halobacterium noricense, isolated from rock salt, to convert glycerol into polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA)—a biodegradable plastic. By cultivating the bacteria on waste glycerol, yields of 0.8 g/L to 3.72 g/L were achieved at varying concentrations.
This not only transforms a pollutant into a valuable resource but also offers a sustainable and economical alternative to petroleum-based plastics
Recycling of lithium ion batteries using Bioleaching
Authors: Dr. Bharat Kale, Dr. Sagar Kanekar ,Athashree Gaikwad, Siddhesh Kanase.

Bioleaching offers an eco-friendly way to recycle lithium-ion batteries by using microbes such as Aspergillus niger and Acidothiobacillus species to recover valuable metals like Li, Co, Ni, and Mn. This sustainable method avoids strong chemicals and high energy use, making it a promising alternative to conventional recycling.
Athashree Gaikwad presented a poster on this research and won 3rd prize at the AIChE Student Regional Conference (India) in the poster presentation category.
